George Condo Biography

George Condo is an American contemporary visual artist, renowned for his unique and influential work that spans across painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. Born on November 10, 1957, in Concord, New Hampshire, Condo's artistic journey began with his studies in Art History and Music Theory at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. His education there, particularly a course on Baroque and Rococo painting, left a lasting impact on his artistic development. In the late 1970s, Condo's creative pursuits extended to music when he joined the proto-synth/punk band The Girls, alongside abstract painter Mark Dagley and avant-garde musician Dave Hild. The band's encounter with Jean-Michel Basquiat's group, Gray, in 1979, proved pivotal for Condo. Basquiat's encouragement led him to relocate to New York City to immerse himself in the burgeoning art scene. Condo quickly became a notable figure in the East Village art movement of the early 1980s. His work during this period was heavily influenced by the Neo-Expressionist movement, characterized by thick, impasto layers of paint and bold, gestural brushstrokes. It was also during this time that he worked briefly in Andy Warhol's Factory, where he was involved in applying diamond dust to Warhol's Myths series. By the mid-1980s, Condo began to forge his own artistic path, developing a style he termed "Artificial Realism." This approach involved reimagining traditional elements of painting, such as portraits and still lifes, in a manner that was both recognizable and absurd. His paintings often feature distorted faces, hybrid creatures, and surreal landscapes, challenging viewers' perceptions of reality and pushing the boundaries of traditional painting. Condo's work is a complex blend of high and low cultural references, merging the techniques of Old Master painting with the sensibility and subject matter akin to American Pop. His "psychological cubism" presents imaginary subjects with exaggerated and contorted facial features, reflecting a range of emotional states and the disjointed human psyche. His figures are a commentary on the human condition, often distilling complex expressions into a single, multifaceted face. Throughout his career, Condo has exhibited his work in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. His first solo exhibition was held at the Ulrike Kantor Gallery in Los Angeles in 1983. Since then, his work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including a mid-career retrospective at the New Museum in New York, which traveled to Rotterdam, London, and Frankfurt. Condo's work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His influence extends beyond the art world, with his artwork gracing the cover of Kanye West's album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," which brought his work into the larger realm of pop culture. In addition to his visual art, Condo has maintained a close relationship with music, considering it an integral part of his creative process. He approaches his paintings with a composer's sensibility, balancing dense, active passages with quieter, open sections, and often compares the process of drawing to jazz music, with its core order and potential for improvisation and spontaneity. Condo's art has been praised for its wit, irreverence, and its ability to reference art history while engaging with contemporary culture. His work continues to be sought after by collectors and remains influential to a new generation of artists. With a career spanning over four decades, George Condo remains a vital and dynamic force in contemporary art.
